A group of health activists has called on the Department of Intellectual Property of the Commerce Ministry to address the problem of "evergreening patents" by multinational pharmaceutical companies.
The term refers to patent holders making minor changes to their formulas to extend their patents for longer than would be allowed without any amendments to the product.
This is usually practised by multinational corporations.
The group, led by Anan Muangmoonchai, vice-president of the Thai Network of People Living with HIV/Aids, gathered at the department yesterday. Mr Anan said the department should issue a manual on evergreening patents.
He said research by the Health Systems Research Institute and the Intellectual Property Department found that 96% of the 2,034 patents granted between 2000 and 2010 were categorised as evergreen patents.
Evergreening by giant pharmaceutical firms hinders public access to affordable medicines as well as domestic research and development, Mr Anan said.
